■ Title : A Decade of Collaborative Problem-Solving Research: From Smart Things to Smart Minds
■ Abstract : Over the past decade, collaboration has proven to be one of the most powerful strategies for solving complex, large-scale problems. This talk traces that journey from the earliest smart, connected devices to the emerging landscape of collaborative artificial intelligence. It opens by examining how machines learned to work together, exploring the principles that allow networked devices and software agents to coordinate, share resources, and act as trustworthy partners in distributed systems. From there, the talk turns to how people and smart technologies collaborate with each other, using real-world examples such as disaster response and digital health, where secure, well-organized cooperation between humans and connected devices can save lives and protect sensitive information. In this talk, we look forward to the next frontier of collaboration in the age of AI, exploring three exciting new dynamics, "how AI can enhance collaboration between people?", "How humans and AI systems can work together as partners", and "How AI systems themselves might collaborate with one another to solve problems beyond human reach." With a decade of insight, the talk offers a big-picture view of how the foundations of trust, security, and teamwork built for smart devices are now shaping the future of collaboration between humans and intelligent machines, making it relevant to anyone curious about where technology and teamwork are headed next.
■ Bio : Dr. Youna Jung is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, whose research spans collaborative and social computing, ubiquitous and smart-city systems, AI-driven disaster response, cybersecurity, privacy, access control, and trust management. She holds a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technology from Ajou University and previously served as tenured faculty at the Virginia Military Institute and as research faculty at the University of Florida, advancing scholarship across e-health, IoT, AI, and cybersecurity. Dr. Jung has led numerous funded projects supported by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, and industry partners, and she contributes extensively to academic leadership as Founder and President of both the ACM Women DC Professional Chapter and the Korean Women Professors Association. A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, she brings decades of interdisciplinary expertise and service to her work, promoting national security, ethics in AI, experiential learning, and the advancement of women in STEM.
